چکیده

The source of fluorine is not well understood, although core-collapse supernovae, Wolf-Rayet stars, and asymptotic giant branch stars have been suggested. A search for evidence of the -process during Type II supernovae is presented. Absorption from interstellar F i is seen in spectra of HD 208440 and HD 209339A acquired with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer. In order to extract the column density for F i from the line at 954 8, absorption from H2 has to be modeled and then removed. Our analysis indicates that for H2 column densities less than about 3 ; 10 cm , the amount of F i can be determined from k954. For these two sight lines, there is no clear indication for enhanced F abundances resulting from the -process in a region shaped by past supernovae. Subject headinggs: ISM: abundances — ISM: atoms — nuclear reactions, nucleosynthesis, abundances — stars: individual (HD 208440, HD 209339A)

Deuterium Abundance toward Wd2211−495 : Results from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (fuse) Mission

We present a deuterium abundance analysis of the line of sight toward the white dwarf WD2211−495 observed with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). Numerous interstellar lines are detected on the continuum of the stellar spectrum. A thorough analysis was performed through the simultaneous fit of interstellar absorption lines detected in the four FUSE channels of multiple observati...

Elemental Abundances and Ionization States within the Local Interstellar Cloud Derived from Hubble Space Telescope and Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer Observations of the Capella Line of Sight

We use ultraviolet spectra of Capella from the Hubble Space Telescope and Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer satellites to study interstellar absorption lines from the Local Interstellar Cloud (LIC). Measurements of these lines are used to empirically determine the ionization states of carbon, nitrogen, and silicon in the LIC, for comparison with the predictions of theoretical photoionizati...

Deuterated molecular hydrogen in the Galactic ISM New observations along seven translucent sightlines

We present column density measurements of the HD molecule in the interstellar gas toward 17 Galactic stars. The values for the seven most heavily reddened sightlines, with E(B − V) = 0.38–0.72, are derived from observations with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). The other ten values are from a reanalysis of spectra obtained with Copernicus. In all cases, high-resolution ground-...

The Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer: Mission Overview and Prospects for Studies of the Interstellar Medium and High Velocity Clouds

The Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) is a NASA astronomy mission that will explore the 905–1187Å wavelength region at high spectral resolution. Funded by NASA’s Explorer Program, this Origins mission is scheduled for a 1999 launch and at least three years of operations. The development of FUSE is being led by the Johns Hopkins University, with major contributions to the program fro...
